13 categories, each one opens with a click:
A. The Nervous System and Basic Regulation 11 concepts
1. Central Nervous System (CNS)
What it is: The brain and spinal cord.
Connection to the work: The place where sensory information, movement, attention, emotion, memory, planning, and decision-making all get organized into one system. Body-based work continuously feeds this system information from the body and the environment.
2. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What it is: The nerves connecting the central nervous system to the rest of the body.
Connection to the work: Lets the brain receive information from muscles, joints, skin, and organs, and send motor commands back to the body.
3. Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
What it is: The system that regulates functions that don't require constant voluntary control: heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, digestion, sweating, and more.
Connection to the work: Especially relevant to work on arousal, regulation, anxiety, recovery, and shifting between activity states.
4. The Sympathetic System
What it is: The main branch of the autonomic nervous system linked to a rise in readiness for action.
Connection to the work: Physical effort, challenge, pressure, and competition can all activate it. The goal in the work isn't to “always calm down,” but to learn to function within arousal and regulate it.
5. The Parasympathetic System
What it is: A system linked, among other things, to recovery, digestion, slowing down, and regulation.
Connection to the work: Important for the ability to come down from arousal after effort or stress. In this work, the ability to make the transition from activity to arousal to recovery matters.
6. The Vagus Nerve
What it is: The main nerve of the parasympathetic system, connecting the brain to many organs in the body.
Connection to the work: Linked to autonomic regulation, the heart, breathing, and the digestive system. Worth being wary of the oversimplified idea that “vagus stimulation equals calm.” The reality is more complex.
7. Arousal
What it is: The general activation level of the nervous system.
Connection to the work: One of the central concepts in this work. Too little arousal leads to low availability; too much leads to overload, impulsivity, or anxiety. The goal is arousal that matches the task.
8. Arousal Regulation
What it is: The ability to change and maintain an arousal level that matches the demands at hand.
Connection to the work: Effort, pace, breathing, motor tasks, sensory load, and challenge can all be used as tools for shifting arousal.
9. Homeostasis
What it is: Maintaining relative stability of the body's internal systems.
Connection to the work: The body is constantly trying to maintain suitable internal conditions. Physical activity creates a controlled deviation from baseline, followed by a demand for recovery.
10. Allostasis
What it is: Maintaining stability through change and adaptation to different conditions.
Connection to the work: A more useful concept than homeostasis for understanding this work. A person isn't meant to be calm all the time; they need to be able to adapt their body state and behavior to the demands of the environment.

104. Complexity
What it is: The number of demands and connections a system needs to manage at once.
Connection to the work: Complexity can be raised without necessarily raising physical intensity.
105. Variability
What it is: Controlled variation between performances, conditions, and tasks.
Connection to the work: Lets a system learn solutions, rather than just memorizing a single performance.
106. Constraints
What it is: Limits or demands that shape the way an action is carried out.
Connection to the work: Changing distance, time, equipment, a rule, or the environment can produce new movement behavior without “explaining” it.
107. Ecological Approach
What it is: Viewing behavior as a product of the relationship between person, task, and environment.
Connection to the work: Fits this work well beyond the treatment room. The environment isn't just a backdrop; it's part of the intervention.
108. Affordance
What it is: The possibilities for action that an environment offers a person, given their abilities and goals.
Connection to the work: The same bench can be a place to sit for one person, an obstacle for another, and a training tool for a third.
109. Embodied Cognition
What it is: The view that cognitive processes are not separate from the body and its interaction with the environment.
Connection to the work: Highly relevant to this framework: thought, perception, movement, and environment are in constant interaction.
110. Enactive Approach
What it is: The view that cognition arises from the active interaction between an organism and its environment.
Connection to the work: Reinforces the idea that a person learns not just “about the world,” but through acting in the world.
M. Key Concepts for Clinical Psychomotor Work 10 concepts
111. Challenge Point
What it is: The level of challenge at which a task demands enough of a person to produce learning, without being too difficult.
Connection to the work: One of the most important principles in choosing an exercise.
112. Cognitive Load
What it is: The amount of cognitive resources required to perform a task.
Connection to the work: Load can be raised through rules, decisions, memory, pace, and stimuli, even without raising physical load.
113. Motor Load
What it is: The physical and coordinative demand of the task.
Connection to the work: Strength, speed, balance, coordination, precision, and endurance.
114. Sensory Load
What it is: The amount and intensity of sensory information the system needs to process.
Connection to the work: Environment, pace, noise, movement, and the number of stimuli can all be adjusted.
115. Emotional Load
What it is: The extent to which a task triggers tension, fear, frustration, excitement, or social pressure.
Connection to the work: Especially significant when the goal is to examine function under demand, not only under calm conditions.
116. Dual Task
What it is: Performing two demands at once, for example movement and a cognitive task.
Connection to the work: Allows examining how function changes when attentional resources are divided.
117. Cognitive-Motor Interference
What it is: A state in which two cognitive or motor tasks compete for resources and affect each other.
Connection to the work: Highly relevant to exercises that combine movement, decision-making, memory, and response.
118. Automaticity
What it is: The ability to perform an action with less need for conscious resources.
Connection to the work: Enables the shift from conscious effort to efficient performance.
119. Resilience
What it is: The ability to adapt, recover, and keep functioning in the face of demands, failure, or stress.
Connection to the work: A challenging task isn't only meant to succeed; it can also teach a person to cope with failure, reset, and try again.
120. Recovery
What it is: Returning to a functional state after physical, cognitive, or emotional load.
Connection to the work: An important measure in its own right: not just how much a person can push themselves, but how quickly and how well they return to function.
How the concepts connect
This is why psychomotor work isn't presented here as “physical activity that improves the brain.” The more accurate picture is this: the teen acts with his body inside a real environment. That action produces sensory information, load, and arousal, alongside decisions that include mistakes and feedback from the environment. The nervous system and the mind process all of this during the movement itself, not only afterward, and a new ability is built out of that processing. The real test of that ability doesn't happen inside the exercise. It happens where it actually matters: at home, in class, and among people, when the teen simply functions in life.
