Why does a teen on the spectrum struggle when plans change?
The trip is pushed back an hour. The substitute teacher is different from the usual one. An afternoon plan changes at the last minute. For most kids, that's a small thing. For a teen on the autism spectrum, it can be the difference between a normal day and a day that falls apart entirely.
It's not "stubbornness" and it's not "doesn't want to bend." It's a real, specific difficulty with a name: cognitive flexibility.
Why a small change feels so big
Cognitive flexibility is the ability to "shift gears": moving between rules, tasks, or perspectives, and adjusting when something in the environment changes. For a teen with a flexibility difficulty, that shift doesn't happen as easily or quickly as it does for others. He relies less on being able to predict what's coming, and more on a certain, predictable routine, so a change, even a small one, can feel like a genuine loss of control, not just passing discomfort.
It's worth saying clearly: this isn't "something wrong." It's a different functional profile, in which alongside the difficulty with change, other abilities and strengths can show up differently in each teen. The problem isn't the teen, but the gap between what the environment demands (frequent flexibility) and his current capacity to meet it.
What this looks like in practice
This difficulty shows up anywhere there's a transition: between classes, between activities, when a game's rule changes, when a plan is cancelled. And sometimes it's hidden behind a reaction that looks like something else entirely (withdrawal, refusal, or even an outburst), when the actual root is simply that the transition itself is too hard in that moment.
How working through movement helps
In movement-based work, it's possible to create, in a controlled dose, exactly what's hard: a task where the rule changes mid-movement, a transition from one exercise to another without advance warning, adapting to environmental conditions that shift in real time. Unlike talking about flexibility, here the teen has to actually perform the adaptation, in the body, at the moment it's needed, not plan it in advance.
Gradualness is critical here: starting with small, structured changes, and gradually moving to less predictable ones, at a pace that fits the specific teen, not to "throw him into change," but to gradually build a real capacity to handle it.
What this isn't
This isn't work that tries to "fix" the need for routine and certainty. That need is entirely legitimate, and sometimes even serves as a stabilizing anchor. The goal isn't to eliminate the need for certainty, but to widen the range of changes the teen can handle without being overwhelmed.
Where to start
Cognitive flexibility is one of several executive functions that can affect a teen's ability to adapt and function day to day. Read more about executive function in teens → Check if this fits your teen →
If you recognize this (real difficulty when plans change, not stubbornness), you can start with a short intro call.
