What is interoception, and why does body awareness matter for function?
For some teens, the ability to identify what's happening in the body can be an important link in the regulation process. It has a name: interoception.
What interoception actually is
Interoception is the ability to sense and identify signals coming from within the body itself (pulse, muscle tension, breath, hunger, fatigue), as opposed to sensing external stimuli like heat or touch. It's connected to emotional experience and to identifying and interpreting internal states: bodily information is part of how emotions are experienced and interpreted, alongside other factors.
It's important to be precise: interoception isn't a "strong" or "weak" switch. It has several separate layers: the ability to detect internal signals, the accuracy of detecting them, awareness of them, how they're interpreted, and the attention directed toward them. A teen can struggle at one layer and not another, so it's better to talk about difficulty identifying or interpreting specific internal signals, not "weak interoception" in general.
Why this affects function
When there's difficulty identifying early internal signals, it's harder to stop in time, ask for a break before something erupts, or recognize the need to self-regulate, not necessarily from lack of will, but because the early signal that should have warned him is less available. This can affect not just emotional regulation, but more basic things too: recognizing hunger, fatigue, or tension before they become a problem.
How this is worked on through movement
Body awareness develops best not through explanation, but through repeated attention to the body during action itself: noticing a change in pulse after effort, distinguishing tension from relaxation in muscles, identifying the moment breath changes. Movement tasks that include deliberate pause moments ("what do you feel in your body right now?" right after effort or a challenge) practice exactly this sense, in the context where it's actually needed.
What this isn't
This isn't a claim that every functional difficulty stems from an interoception difficulty, and it isn't a substitute for emotional intervention when that's needed. It's one capacity within a broader system, but a capacity that's very easy to miss, because it doesn't look like a behavioral difficulty from the outside.
Where to start
If it seems like the teen struggles to notice in real time when he's starting to become overwhelmed, it's worth checking if this is exactly the missing link. Read more about the connection between emotional regulation and physiological arousal → Check if this fits your teen →
