Developing capacities through body, movement, and environment
Psychomotor therapy focuses on developing functional capacities in teens through the body and movement — not only through talking. The goal is for the teen to be able to act, cope, and participate more: at school, with friends, and at home.
What is psychomotorics?
The approach is grounded in psychomotor principles: a field concerned with the connection between body, movement, perception, and action. In my work, these principles serve as a practical tool: creating physical and movement-based experiences that let capacities be worked on, not just discussed.
Why the teen's state, body, movement & environment?
The teen's state
Every intervention starts from the teen's specific state in a given moment, not a general formula that fits everyone. This state includes his nervous system, his temperament, his energy and arousal level, and what happened to him beforehand. The behavior we see is the visible expression of all of this together.
Body
The body constantly feeds the brain information about our state: movement, force, balance, effort, and arousal. I use this information to create situations where the teen has to notice, regulate, and adjust his own action.
Movement
Movement lets a capacity be practiced within action, not just discussed. A ball game, a strength task, or a reaction drill can develop attention, response inhibition, flexibility, planning, or persistence.
Environment
The environment is part of the work, not just its backdrop. Open space allows working with people, noise, distance, change, and stimulation, gradually building the capacity to handle demands closer to daily life.
The body is the tool. Movement is the means of experience. Developing capacity and function is the goal.
How do I think about the difficulty?
The diagnosis tells us something important, but it doesn't necessarily tell us what's actually limiting the teen. Two teens with the same diagnosis can face completely different difficulties. That's why the work starts with a question: what does the teen struggle to do in daily life, and what's behind that difficulty?
For example, a teen who struggles with impulsivity doesn't necessarily "need to learn to stop." Depending on his profile, this might call for work on response inhibition, arousal regulation, or flexibility, sometimes several at once. A different teen who looks "unmotivated" from the outside might be dealing with an entirely different mechanism, for example, difficulty with initiative.
The process is cyclical: functional difficulty, mechanism, capacity, experience, function, participation, and back around. A large part of the learning here is mine: the better I get to know the teen, the better I understand what's behind his difficulty, and what's right to do next. Each cycle brings new understanding (sometimes drawing on additional frameworks too), and never returns exactly to the starting point. Each cycle expands on the last.
The goal isn't for the teen to perform better only during the session. The goal is for the developing capacities to let him do more in life itself.

How does change in a session become change in life?
A capacity that only develops within the session isn't the end goal. Throughout the process, we check whether the change also shows up at home, at school, with friends, and in situations where the teen needs to act independently.
The capacity is the means. Function is the target. Participation in life is the goal.
Working principles
Matched Challenge
The task demands real effort, but is matched to the teen's current capacity.
Graded Load
Demands build up gradually, matched to the ability to handle them.
Changing Conditions
Varying conditions builds adaptation and lets a capacity transfer to new contexts.
Repeated Experience
Repeated chances to use the capacity, get feedback, and try again.
Mechanism-Based Thinking
Activities are chosen because they create the right demand for the capacity in focus.
What this work isn't
This isn't physical activity for fitness alone, and it isn't work based mainly on talking. Movement here is used as a focused tool for developing functional capacities. In cases that also require medical, psychiatric, or psychological treatment, this work can complement it.
An approach that starts from the teen, not the diagnosis
There's no single exercise that fits every teen with ADHD, autism, or anxiety. There's a specific teen, with his own capacities, difficulties, needs, and environment. So the question isn't just "what's the diagnosis?" It's: what does this teen need to become able to do more, and what can be developed to get him there?
